How Cantiro Brings People-First Safety to Residential Construction Sites Across Canada
Cantiro is an integrated real estate developer and homebuilder headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta, with residential operations throughout Canada. With employees and trade partners working across the country, maintaining clear, consistent safety oversight is critical. Cantiro needed a flexible, intuitive platform like SiteDocs® that could centralize safety information and give its team real-time visibility across its operations.

Residential Scale, Constant Complexity
When Nicole Paterson was 18, her best friend died in a workplace incident. That tragedy set the course for her career. Determined to help prevent others from experiencing the same kind of loss, she dedicated herself to health and safety, and to one guiding conviction: At the end of the workday, everyone should be able to return home to their family and friends.
Today, Nicole brings that commitment to her role as senior health and safety advisor at Cantiro. She oversees health and safety across the company’s Edmonton, Calgary, and Kelowna operations, with responsibilities spanning single-family and multifamily construction, fleet, security, administration, and policy rollouts. Together, Nicole and one field-based safety colleague help support approximately 154 employees, more than 800 trade partners, and roughly 36 sites, all while Nicole remains on call around the clock.
At that scale, paperwork was one of Nicole’s biggest headaches. Getting daily field-level hazard assessment submissions from hundreds of trade partners made it difficult to keep information organized and understand what was happening beyond Edmonton.
Digitizing those processes should have helped, but Cantiro’s existing systems created problems of their own. When Nicole joined the company, she inherited what she described as a “chaotic mess”: Parts of the system weren’t working, and teams were completing tasks in multiple places.
Cantiro moved to a new provider, hoping for a better fit. However, after a year, Nicole faced a different kind of frustration: The platform offered too little flexibility, and the provider showed little interest in her suggestions, even when she proposed changes designed to improve the experience for its users.
After neither system delivered the visibility and flexibility Cantiro needed, Nicole knew the next platform had to:
- Bring forms and field submissions together in one place.
- Give her real-time visibility across Canada.
- Keep workers from having to jump between multiple programs.
- Let her update forms and build workflows as Cantiro’s needs evolved.
The right platform needed to do more than put paperwork online. It had to give Cantiro’s safety team greater visibility and control—without creating more friction for the people using it in the field.
Less Paper Chasing. More Real-Time Visibility
When Cantiro’s existing platform came up for renewal, Nicole was more than ready for a change. Having used SiteDocs in a previous role, she already knew its technical teams were open and responsive. So, Nicole recommended the platform to Cantiro’s executive team.
Although management agreed to the switch, there were some concerns that field workers would resist the new technology. To ease the transition, Nicole designed a hands-on rollout that gave workers time to experiment with the platform in Cantiro’s sandbox. The approach paid off quickly: Within 20 minutes, team members were already expressing excitement about the transition.
[The app] was just really easy to use. It wasn’t complicated. [Workers] didn’t have to worry about constantly jumping from different programs or different things within the app. Even the forms are nicely laid out. That’s what they really enjoyed.
She also values the responsive support behind the platform. Whenever Nicole wants to take a workflow further, SiteDocs’s Technical Solutions team is ready to help.
When you contact the Technical Solutions department, they’re right there, right away, really willing to help you build workflows. They’ll either teach you how to do it … or walk you through the process.
Faster Action. Stronger Engagement. Award-Winning Safety.
Since Cantiro switched to SiteDocs, Nicole has a more responsive, flexible way to manage safety—and a clearer view across the company’s operations. She can now:
- Monitor submissions across Edmonton, Calgary, and Kelowna without piecing together updates from multiple systems.
- Respond faster to time-sensitive issues through automatic notifications, including theft-report alerts.
- Give management a clear, high-level view without overwhelming managers with day-to-day details.
- Keep forms current—and workers engaged—as legislation and safety requirements change.
This flexibility also helps Nicole combat complacency. She regularly changes one non-safety question on Cantiro’s field-level hazard assessment to see whether workers are reading each form or simply operating on autopilot. One version asked what theme song best fit their subdivision. The lighthearted question serves a serious purpose: keeping workers engaged with the hazards in front of them.
Cantiro’s broader commitment to safety has also received outside recognition. In 2026, it was named an Excellence Awardee in the Canada’s Safest Employers Awards in the Safest Construction Employer (Under 300 Employees) category.
For Nicole, the impact ultimately comes back to the people doing the work. By centralizing safety information and making it easier to keep forms current, SiteDocs supports the people-first safety program Nicole is building at Cantiro, along with the goal that has guided her career: helping people return safely to their families and friends.
Centralizing everything into one spot really helped us. … At the touch of my finger, I could see what was going on in any of my sites.
